Kisiama is a village of about 250 people, home to the RougeCongo palm tree nursery. Located on a hill facing Mount Bangu, about 800 meters from the river, the villagers were using the river water for washing, cooking, and drinking.
Women had to walk to fetch water from the river, which was exhausting and unhygienic. In November 2023, RougeCongo installed a manual pump in the village to support local development. Now, with the new hand-dug well and rope pump, villagers have access to clean water right in their village.
Furthemore, in recent years, the villagers have started selling charcoal to city dwellers, leading to a significant reduction in the surrounding forest. Since 2022, RougeCongo has promoted agroforestry by offering farmers the opportunity to establish small palm groves bordered by fast-growing trees.
For RougeCongo, it is essential that the village is flourishing alongside the palm groves.
