In 2020, sub-Saharan Africa recorded the highest food waste of any region in the world, with 21.4% of food lost on the agricultural value chain. (This number does not include food waste from retail, households, and food services).
The agricultural value chain is a complex process in which each step plays a vital role in ensuring a sustainable and efficient food system. In many parts of Africa, limited development and financing have hindered the growth of the phases in the value chain, especially processing and storage.
